Meadow away in the cup. Massive game. Sadly due to serious amounts of alcohol consumption a match report wasn’t written for this game, but it will always be remembered for two things. The remarkable come back from Chew who were on the brink of their third defeat in a row (only to eventually loose in extra time)! And the remarkable snap out from Franny who was on the brink of his third split up with his girlfriend in as many hours.
Meadow scored either side of half time with two scrappy goals that looked to of put Chew out the cup in the first round. The type of goals that were conceded were the type that we haven’t conceded all season, so it was highly frustrating to let goals in in this manner. However we were passing the ball around well. Franny would 2 foot someone to win the ball back, lay it off to Stan or Dan in a midfield 3 and an attack would be set up.
Chew scored their first when a shot was fired in from Nick on the left wing, the ball rebounded to the onrushing Fran and after a good first touch Fran placed the ball in the top corner before unleashing a torrent of expletives at everyone within ear shot. The second came 5 minutes later when the partnership of Nick and Dawse on the left linked up again so that this time Dawson had a shot that was parried by the Meadow keeper straight into Charlie’s feet who turned and poked home. 2-2. Chew had the chance to win it when Nick crossed into the middle for Gary who had made a run to the front post and from point blank range the keeper made an excellent save. A shame for Gary who had an outstanding game but will always be remembered for this miss.
So extra time it was and Meadow grabbed a highly annoying winner, in exactly the same fashion as the other 2 goals when a high cross saw 4 Chew players surround one Meadow man who managed to poke the ball to his team mate who slotted into an empty net. Fran had the chance to take the game to penalty’s when the keeper again fumbled a cross but Fran couldn’t find the empty net with an effort from the edge of the area.
We showed great character to get back into the game but it wasn’t to be. Franny entertained us all with his tackling and the effort was there from all of us. So no silverware for Chew this season but a remarkable improvement this season compared to the last few.
